We offer a range of workshops, activities, and KS1, KS2 & KS3 handling sessions for visiting groups.

  • Roman Oxford - Find out about Oxford ’s origins in the Roman pottery industry, handle real Roman archaeology from the local area and make an Oxfordshire ware bowl.

     

    • Stories from the Grave - Investigate Anglo-Saxon life and death with a pottery craft to take back to school.

     

    • Medieval Rubbish - What was the medieval equivalent of crisps? How were ice skates made? Rummage through a genuine medieval rubbish pit to find out the answers!

       

    • Tudor Oxford - Investigate life in Oxford for Tudor rich and poor through their houses and homes, the food they add and the clothes they wore.

     

    • A City at War - Oxford during the Civil War - Discover what it was like to live in a city under siege when King Charles I made Oxford his capital city, using artefacts, paintings and contemporary evidence.  New gallery activity sheets developed with Headington Prep School available now.

     

    • Washday Blues - Find out about the rich and poor of Victorian Oxford and handle artefacts from a typical washday.

    ·         Darkside of the Victorians: Children on trial - Every pupil has a part to play in this re-enactment of a Victorian children’s trial using real Oxford cases. Held in the Town Hall court room. Combine this workshop with a visit to Oxford Castle Unlocked to explore the consequences of Victorian child crime! (Additional £4 per student)

     

    ·         We'll Meet Again: The Home Front in Oxford - Find out what life was like in Oxford during World War Two for evacuees, ARP wardens and the women who worked for the war effort.

     

    ·         From Bike to BMW: How a car factory changed a city - Investigate how the Morris Motors car factory changed Oxford through handling artefacts, exploring historical maps, photographs and documents, and listening to oral histories.

     

    ·         Time Detectives - Handle real and replica artefacts and use historical enquiry skills to investigate the past and its evidence.

School workshops typically last 90 minutes, including 45 minutes handling session with a museum assistant and 45 minutes in the museum galleries with worksheets. Workshops cost £3 per child. For more information please contact the museum on 01865 252 761 or download the learning flyer.
