Rationing

The first ration books in Oxford were issued in October 1939. Introduction of rationing proceeded smoothly in Oxfordshire, many welcoming “Coupon Monday” as an end to favouritism and privilege.

People with allotments, or big gardens, were able to supplement their diets, and there was an increase in animal keeping. The Ministry of Food organised cookery demonstrations, and issued a series of recipe leaflets.

Entertainment

A wide range of wartime entertainment boosted morale. Popular songs, concerts and dances were provided for troops in Oxfordshire.

Make Do and Mend

The spirit of “Make Do And Mend” permeated every aspect of everyday life as the nation struggled with an insufficiency of commodities. Life had its dreary aspects, and was dominated by endless queues, but there was a sense of common purpose, and an urge to “keep smiling through”.
